For the 10th year of Heritage’s opening, the school’s administration has taken action on creating a new logo. Due to copyright issues in the past, Frisco Independent School District (FISD) wants to give each school its own logo to copyright.

After a decade of sharing our logo with the Arizona Coyotes hockey team, Digital Interactive Media Teacher and Football Coach Kelvin Newsome along with a team of selected students are at work to create an original logo for Heritage. This team includes seniors Archit Karkare and Kai DeWitt with sophomores Kristen Mimms and Syeda Ali. By combining their various skills like design, typography and illustration, these students are working until late December to create a completely new logo to be the face of Heritage.

DeWitt is a two year Independent Student Mentorship student with a focus on graphic design. After working with his mentor, designer Ryan Raschbaum, Dewitt was given a leadership position on the logo team.

“I’m using everything I’ve learned about working in a studio environment to help guide the process of the logos design,” DeWitt said.

The process of incorporating the new logo will not be immediate. The murals on the gym walls and other locations throughout the school where the logo is depicted will need to be repainted due to the change. Other things like handed-down jerseys and Heritage spirit wear from previous years will be phased out in the next few years..

This isn’t the only change for Heritage, with the possibility of a new color pallette. Every school in the district is given the same budget for all uniforms, but because of the unique gold shade, Heritage has had to pay more for customized colors, leaving the campus with less money in the budget to be used in comparison to other schools.

In order to change the colors, Principal Mark Mimms will have to meet with the FISD School Board Color Committee. The new colors could potentially be maroon and white with a grey accent, keeping the original Heritage style with a new look. This will allow more frequent purchases of spirit ware and uniforms with the given budget.

If you want to keep up with the process of the logo development, follow Coach Newsome on his personal twitter @Win_Anyhow for updates, or email at [email protected] with any ideas you want to contribute.
