Becoming one of the most successful horror movie franchises of the 21st century, The Conjuring is about to take horror movie-making to the next level. After the last two films becoming an instant success, director James Wan has decided to revamp the series and not set the plot within a haunted house, steering the series out of his comfort zone. With a set release date in early 2018, horror movie junkies will soon have a box-office film to mark in their calendars.

Initially, Warner Bros Entertainment had released The Conjuring at low budget, yet avid horror movie fans were immediately drawn to the film’s realistic flare, all the while maintaining a terrifying plot with twists and turns to keep audiences hooked.

This memorable horror movie rendition was soon catapulted towards a wave of success where “reviews are solid, the fans are pleased, and audiences are embracing big-scale and adult-skewing horror in a way that has to be thrilling to hardcore fans,” Scott Mendelson said.

Due to the film’s success, Wan has directed a sequel and two spin-offs, which have elevated the series into the most successful horror movie franchise, surpassing the “$1 billion threshold at the box office worldwide.

Wan and his co-writer, David Leslie Johnson, are strategically taking the next installment of the series out of its recurring haunted house theme and implementing the same terrifying twists into an outdoor, dark-fairytale setting. Because of The Conjuring’s success, the franchise has the ability to play with movie-making dynamics and create a hopefully memorable horror film. No major plots have been released thus far, but Wan “expressed interest last year in exploring lycanthropy (i.e. werewolves) in the next movie.” Whatever the case may be, the horror movie community will be pleased.

Most avid scary movie fans are excited to see how the filmmaking process will occur, as it will be different than all previous Conjuring films.

“I think it’s going to be interesting to see how they are going to film it outdoors,” sophomore Hira Khan, a horror film fan, said. “I feel like it’s not your typical type of scary movie.”

With all this hype, however, many people are questioning if Wan’s strategies will actually help propel the series into an even higher box-office.

When asked if the popularity of the latest film will surpass the previous installments, Khan seemed pretty confident with her opinions.

“The first one is just so hard to beat,” Khan said.
