2009, around 6 at night, Kaitlin’s parents called her and her little sisters downstairs. She knew it was bad because of the tears she saw falling from her dad’s eyes before she even sat down.

Her parents, the two people she witnessed love from for the first time, the love she thought would last forever, wasn’t. The bond was gone, but mainly forgotten. There wasn’t any love left, just hate.

And that’s when her dad said with tears in his eyes, “I’m sorry girls, but daddy is going to go away for awhile.” Of course neither of her sisters knew what that meant, not her older sister, and definitely not her little sister.

But Kaitlin did. She knew what that meant.

She knew they were having problems.

She heard the yelling at night behind the shut doors.

She knew it all.

But she hoped what she thought was happening,

wasn’t.

But it was.

She tried to come up with reasons of why,

But none of them ever seemed to make sense.

She never got an explanation of why, her parents were getting a divorce.

She didn’t understand.

She knew stuff was going to change so fast.

She knew that there weren’t going to be any more family dinners,

She knew that there weren’t going to be any more family vacations,

She knew that there weren’t going to be any more church Sundays as a family,

She knew that there weren’t going to be any more family holidays together anymore,

She knew both of her parents were going to move on,

She knew she would maybe have a step dad later one,

and maybe even a step mom.

But they would never take the place of her real parents..

But mainly she knew that when she woke up in the morning, she was only going to see one

parent, not two, and that right there is what crushed Kaitlin’s heart the most.

She wasn’t ready, her whole world was about to change so quickly,

So quickly that she couldn’t even hold onto all the changes that were about to happen.
